hyperallergic:

A new mural by street artist Gaia is titled “The Dusk of H Street” (2012) and was commissioned by Smith Commons.

Located on 1245 H Street, NE, Washington DC, the interior of the chest is, according to the artist, an Albert Bierstadt landscape painting of Yosemite referencing American manifest destiny and western expansion. While it’s not clear which painting it exactly is, it does resemble his “Valley of Yosemite” (1864).

Gaia suggests that, “The virgin terrain is contrasted with an old vacant building on H street which is a historically divested neighborhood is currently undergoing a massive transition.”

Woman with a Hat by Henri Matisse. Marsden Hartley was a painter who did not stick to any one particular style. That sounds great in theory but when you try to figure out how to artistically classify him, it gets really messy and complicated. One artist that I can say definitely inspired this American artist was Henri Matisse. This work shows a bleeding and layering of colors that gradually becomes more apparent in Hartley’s later pieces.

Interesting thoughts! See Matisse’s Femme au chapeau on our website here. Learn more about this piece in our interactive feature (which is really FUN) here!

A slight touch of M. Henri Matisse’s vermilion makes me insane.

Modern Art as a Healing Tool
Saw this on CBS Sunday Morning (which is becoming one of my favorite shows) and wanted to link to it.  From the LA Times: “On a Sunday morning CBS broadcast, news correspondent Bill Whitaker takes a tour through the 1,000 pieces of modern art on display at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.”
I loved how picky the hospital was about the art they accepted.  It’s not a place for celebrities to “dump” the art they no longer want, explained Leonard Nemoy and his wife. Artists in their collection include Jasper Johns, AndyWarhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Frank Stella, among others.
I also enjoyed seeing the patients connect to different pieces or just enjoying the act of walking around and looking at the variety of the work.

Such a great story! Thx for sharing.

Just up the street from LACMA—what a great collection! I’m considering coming down with something just to get a closer look.

I used to make fun of some shows that was held at Asan Medical Center, even though they would bring famous artwork around. Just a poor taste! #medicalcenters

"Love the animals, love the plants, love everything. If you love everything, you will perceive the divine mystery in things. Once you perceive it, you will begin to comprehend it better every day. And you will come at last to love the whole world with an all-embracing love."

“You want to know what happiness is? It’s waking up in the middle of the night for no reason, shifting under the blankets and feeling the heat of the person next to you. You turn around and see them in their most peaceful, innocent, and vulnerable state. They breathe as though the weight of the world lays on anyone’s shoulder but their own. You smile, kiss their face in the most gentle manner so as not to wake them. You turn back around and an involuntary grin forms on your own face. You feel an arm wrap around your waist, and you know it doesn’t get any better than this.”

This.

Awww I know what’s missing in my life
